ST.THOMAS'S INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL is the first international school of Viterbo, using an interdisciplinary framework and maintaining a proficiency level both in Italian and English. Twinned with Ambrit Rome International School, St. Thomas's assures high standard of academic learning and facilitates the development of the child as an “inquirer”, both inside and outside of the classroom.
At St. Thomas's we study art and crafts, drama, ICT, music and sports from an early age. All the activities are designed to provide opportunities for experimental and co-operative learning and to exploit the communicative importance of languages.
ST.THOMAS'S INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL adopts a bi-lingual programme in which English is the main language, while Italian is maintained at a proficiency level throughout the subjects. Continuity with the Italian State programme is ensured for those children who may wish to enter the Italian State Education System at a later stage.
Our school is comprised of two departments: Early Childhood and Primary, with the former comprised of Nursery, Reception and Prep, and the latter comprised of Grades 1-5. Since 2017, we have also activated the Middle School department with Grades 6-7-8. There are teaching 17 staff members and 88 students with an average of 11 children in each class. Our school is small but steadily growing; it was founded only 5 years ago and strives to meet excellent standards which have been recognized by the those living in and around Viterbo.
Our student profile is mainly Italian while our staff, except for a few specialist teachers and Italian teachers, are all mother tongue English speakers. Drama is one of the particular strengths at our school; not only does our Drama teacher lead in the collaboration with the Music and Art teachers, thereby creating a holistic creative experience for the students, she also brings the whole school together for the annual Winter and Summer performances. Drama is a key for children to develop personally and socially, by seeing different perspectives and exploring empathy for others, but it is also an important medium to develop confidence as a communicator, in particular English language.
The other great strength of our school lies in language development. We are dedicated to staying abreast the current learning trends, in particular bilingualism. We hire guest speakers for presentations and forums for staff and parents on bilingualism and psychomotricity and inform our teaching with best practices.
At St. Thomas’s we believe that children will learn best if parents know, understand and share the overall aims of the school. Our rules, regulations and policies are all documents that are created, reviewed and reflected upon as we grow with each successive year. Our beliefs are reflected in our above mission statement as well as the learner profile attributes which inform our school curriculum and approach to learning: Balanced, Principled, Reflective, Thinker, Communicator, Knowledgeable, Inquirer, Open-minded, Risk-taker, and Caring.
St. Thomas's motto is “Live to Learn, Learn to Live” because our commitment is to pass on to our students a passion for learning that goes beyond school desks and lasts a lifetime.
Our school has no previous experience in the entrepreneurial education in the strict sense.
Nevertheless, being a bilengual school where students are stimulated from a very early age to learn in an innovative, proactive and non formal way, the FANTASIA project fits for us. As partner school, we will participate in all project actions and test among our pupils the efficacy of the FANTASIA
Software, givin our contribution to its creation from a pedagogic point of view. Our inquiry-based system will be very useful to the project since is going to develop non-formal methodologies among teachers to re-use on students.
The other great strength of our school lies in language development. We are dedicated to staying abreast the current learning trends, in particular bilingualism. We hire guest speakers for presentations and forums for staff and parents on bilingualism and psychomotility and inform our
teaching with best practices. Our teachers, being English native speakers will easily deliver the training contents of the Toolkits to both teachers and parents, both in Italian language or in English language if considered appropriate.
